Thunderstorm Warning for Bavaria: DWD Warns of Heavy Rain, Hail, and Storm Gusts

At the end of the hot weekend, the risk of thunderstorms is rising significantly in parts of Bavaria. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued official warnings for individual regions. Locally, strong thunderstorms are possible – with heavy rain, hail, as well as storm or severe gusts. Which districts and places are affected can change at short notice; the current DWD warning map for Bavaria is decisive.

Where in Bavaria the Thunderstorm Risk Remains Particularly in Focus

The DWD lists warnings for thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail, as well as storm and severe gusts on its warning map for Bavaria, depending on the district or location. The period of validity is also indicated there. Because thunderstorm cells can move in small areas and intensify rapidly, the following applies: Even neighboring places can be affected differently – and the situation can shift within a short time.

In the event of thunderstorms, the DWD points out typical acute dangers: Lightning strikes can be life-threatening; falling branches or flying objects can also hit people. In the case of heavy rain, flooding is also possible – for example, on roads, in underpasses, or in basements. Anyone who hears thunder or sees a thunderstorm front approaching should avoid staying outdoors as much as possible and secure loose objects (for example, on balconies).

A look at the DWD warning levels helps to classify:

  • Level 1 (yellow, weather warning)
  • Level 2 (orange, warning of significant weather)
  • Level 3 (red, severe weather warning)
  • Level 4 (dark red, warning of extreme severe weather)

Additionally, the DWD uses further labels, for example for heat or UV warnings as well as preliminary warnings. For practical decisions on site, the specific description in the respective warning message – and the spatial assignment to one's own location – is more important than the color alone.

What Consequences the Thunderstorms Already Had on Saturday

How quickly thunderstorm situations can turn into damage was shown on Saturday in several regions of Bavaria. In the area of responsibility of the Lower Bavaria Police Headquarters, there were, according to a police spokesman, more than 100 weather-related operations, with a focus between Straubing and Passau. Among other things, the following were reported:

  • fallen branches
  • overturned traffic signs
  • temporarily flooded roads

In Bogen (Straubing-Bogen district), a couple was slightly injured: A beam fell from scaffolding at a church and hit both on the head and shoulder; they suffered lacerations. In addition, there were isolated weather-related disruptions to train services in the region, according to a railway spokeswoman.

Damage was also reported from Franconia. In Geiselwind (Kitzingen district), lightning struck a residential building on Saturday morning. No one was injured; according to investigators, the damage amounted to several thousand euros. Near Rattelsdorf (Bamberg district), several trees fell onto federal highway 4, and the route was temporarily completely closed.

Consequences were also reported in Bayreuth: A tree about 15 meters high was uprooted in the east of the city on Saturday afternoon and fell onto five parked vehicles; the damage was estimated at around 25,000 euros. In another case, a fallen tree damaged two vehicles. Police and fire brigade were also called out because of a damaged garden shed and a flowerpot blown off a balcony. According to current knowledge, no one was injured.

How the Weather Will Develop at the Beginning of the Week

During the night to Monday, there will initially continue to be showery rain and isolated thunderstorms in parts of Bavaria. After midnight, these are expected to retreat, weakening, increasingly to the Alps and the eastern low mountain range. Lows are expected between 15 degrees in the southeast and 11 degrees in some Alpine valleys.

On Monday, clouds will predominate at first. In the Alps and from Upper Franconia to the Bavarian Forest, rain is still likely. Later, sunny intervals are possible from the west, with only isolated showers. Highs are expected to reach 18 to 26 degrees.

After that, the weather will remain changeable: For Tuesday, sun and clouds are expected; in the afternoon and evening, rain or isolated thunderstorms could occur again in the west and near the Alps, while it will mostly remain dry towards the east. By midweek, it will become somewhat cooler again.

For Bavaria, this means: The decisive risks do not arise over large areas and permanently, but locally and at short notice where thunderstorm cells pass through. Anyone on the move should closely follow the official DWD warnings for their own location and quickly seek shelter in the event of a thunderstorm.
