Invisible Particles, Big Questions: KinderUni discovers microplastics
How can plastic break down into tiny particles and why are these traces found in our environment? At KinderUni Straubing, young knowledge enthusiasts experience an exciting lecture about microplastics. Together with Dipl.-Ing. (Univ.) Cristina Pop, children investigate the causes and discover how science explains environmental issues in an understandable way.
When Everyday Plastic Becomes Really Small
Plastic encounters children every day: in packaging, clothing, and toys. When it breaks down or wears out, tiny plastic particles are created that are often not visible to the naked eye. The lecture presents age-appropriate information about where microplastics come from, how they can enter soils, waters, and food chains, and why a conscious approach to plastic is important.
Astonishing Science and Thoughtful Engagement
KinderUni combines learning fun with a real learning experience outside the classroom. Participants learn how researchers study microplastics, what traces the small particles leave behind, and which questions environmental science addresses. This creates a child-friendly approach to sustainability, research, and responsible actions.
Expert Knowledge from the Straubing Practice
The lecture is led by Dipl.-Ing. (Univ.) Cristina Pop, head of the Straubing city drainage and street cleaning department. This gives children insights into a field that is closely connected to water, wastewater, the environment, and the protection of natural habitats. KinderUni Straubing is supported by the Bürgerstiftung Straubing in collaboration with the Volkshochschule Straubing and the Competence Center for Renewable Resources.
Ages 8-14, Safe and Full of Curiosity
The program is aimed at children aged 8 to 14 years. The approximately one-hour lecture takes place in the tiered auditorium of the TUM Campus Straubing. The focus is on understandable explanations, curious questions, and the joy of acquiring knowledge. Children experience a safe learning environment and discover that science can be exciting, illustrative, and found in everyday life.
What Families Take Away from the Lecture
After the family experience, many thought-provoking ideas for everyday life remain: How can plastic be avoided? What reusable ideas help? And what can children do to protect water and the environment? The event strengthens environmental awareness, independent thinking, and family time around a topic that affects both children and adults alike.
Conclusion: KinderUni Straubing makes an invisible environmental problem tangible and transforms complex research into an exciting learning experience. Children aged 8 to 14 can expect an informative afternoon filled with laughter, wonder, and many new questions. Register now and discover microplastics together.
