The new town of Straubing was established in 1218. Several hundred buildings date from the period between the 14th and 19th centuries. St. Jakob Church has a 97.40-meter high bell tower, one of the tallest in Germany. A 68-meter high town tower (watchtower in the Middle Ages) from the former 2,700-meter long city wall is still preserved along with several hundred meters and 7 towers. Other attractions include the Carmelite Church, the 600-meter long main square/main street with magnificent gabled houses, and the Gäuboden Museum.

The old town of Straubing is quite manageable. Most of it revolves around the divided town square with the church that has a somewhat unusual tower. There are hardly any parking spaces in the center. North of the old town, there is a large parking lot.

Beautiful historic old town, partly with houses from the early 15th century. A lot of old building substance has been preserved in Straubing, which adds to the charm of the city. Varied architecture through the centuries.
