Library East Straubing | Opening Hours & Open Library
The Library East in Straubing is the district library of Straubing-East and thus much more than a classic lending location. It belongs to the City Library of Straubing, was built in 1964, and reopened in 2025 after extensive renovation and an extension. Today, the location presents itself as a modern educational and meeting place in the neighborhood, connecting reading, learning, staying, and digital participation. The official site describes the library with around 8,400 media, while OeBiB presents it as a flexible, locally accessible cultural and educational place with high quality of stay. Particularly important is the role of the library as a social meeting point in the district of Straubing-East, which otherwise has few public cultural venues. ([stadtbibliothek-straubing.de](https://www.stadtbibliothek-straubing.de/standorte/straubing-ost))
Opening Hours of Library East Straubing
Those wishing to visit the Library East in Straubing will find a clearly structured opening model that combines supervised hours with Open-Library hours. The staffed opening hours are Tuesdays and Fridays from 08:30 to 12:30 and from 13:30 to 18:00. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the branch is staffed from 13:30 to 18:00. This allows visits to be well planned for advice, lending, inquiries, and personal support. This mix of reliable service time and longer usable space is particularly practical for families, students, and working individuals. ([stadtbibliothek-straubing.de](https://www.stadtbibliothek-straubing.de/standorte/straubing-ost))
Additionally, Library East offers significantly extended opening hours during Open-Library operations. On Tuesdays and Fridays, access without staff is possible early in the morning, during lunch between the service blocks, and in the evening; on Wednesdays and Thursdays, there are also additional time slots in the morning and evening. On Saturdays and Sundays, the use in Open-Library mode is particularly generous. It is important to note: During staffed hours, personal service is available, but not during Open-Library hours. During these times, no new registrations, fee payments, or advisory discussions are planned. Thus, the library combines classic service quality with a very flexible access for everyday life in the district. ([stadtbibliothek-straubing.de](https://www.stadtbibliothek-straubing.de/standorte/straubing-ost))
Open Library: Access without Staff and Video Surveillance
The Open-Library principle is one of the most striking features of Library East. It makes the location accessible to adult library users even when no staff is present. The prerequisite is an active library card, a minimum age of 18 years, and a paid annual fee. Access is then independent, allowing the space to be used outside of regular service hours. The City Library of Straubing emphasizes that the East branch thus becomes a place where learning, reading, and staying are not tied to strict office hours. For a district with few leisure and cultural offerings, this is a real added value. ([stadtbibliothek-straubing.de](https://www.stadtbibliothek-straubing.de/standorte/straubing-ost))
However, the handling of security and self-service is also important. During Open-Library hours, the library operates without staff on-site and with video surveillance. The recordings are only reviewed under clearly defined conditions, such as when there are significant damages or soiling. For normal library operations, this means: The rooms remain open, quiet, and usable independently, while the operation is organizationally secured. Media can be borrowed using self-checkout machines and returned via the return box during this time. This combination of freedom and structure makes Library East particularly unique: It is open, but not anonymous; flexible, but not arbitrary. ([stadtbibliothek-straubing.de](https://www.stadtbibliothek-straubing.de/standorte/straubing-ost))
Address, Returns, and Contact in Straubing-East
The address of Library East is clear and simple: Breslauer Str. 25, 94315 Straubing. The location is in Straubing-East and is closely connected to the neighboring educational center Ulrich Schmidl, which includes a kindergarten, primary and secondary school, as well as after-school care. This makes the library not only an independent cultural venue but also part of a developed educational environment. For practical contact, the City Library provides the service phone number 09421 944 80 321 as well as the email address of the branch. So, anyone wanting to clarify opening hours, returns, or general questions will find a direct contact to the institution there. ([stadtbibliothek-straubing.de](https://www.stadtbibliothek-straubing.de/standorte/straubing-ost))
Returning media is also organized simply. Generally, borrowed media should be returned to the branch where they were borrowed. Outside of opening hours, a return box is available in Straubing-East, allowing returns to be made without being tied to personal service hours. This is especially helpful for people who only have time in the evening or on weekends. The library consciously operates with a streamlined, practical system: Media are used on-site, extended if necessary, and simply placed back in the box upon later return. This keeps usage close to the life rhythm of visitors. ([stadtbibliothek-straubing.de](https://www.stadtbibliothek-straubing.de/ausleihen/faq))
Media Collection, Advice, and Digital Offers
Library East sees itself not only as a place for reading but also as a place for information dissemination. On-site, all media can be used free of charge and without registration, as long as they are read, viewed, or used for work within the premises. Those wishing to borrow media need a library card, but no registration is required for the use of the collection, workspaces, and reading café. Additionally, the team assists with catalog searches, research in regional and national catalogs, and questions about literature on specific topics. Interlibrary loan requests are also supported by the City Library of Straubing. Thus, the library becomes a real working tool for school, study, hobbies, and everyday life. ([stadtbibliothek-straubing.de](https://www.stadtbibliothek-straubing.de/ausleihen/benutzung))
According to the official library description, digital usage includes free Wi-Fi access, workspaces with power connections, and in the overall system of the City Library, additional technical services such as laptops, eBook readers, and self-checkout. For the Straubing-East branch, the library profile also highlights the modern equipment with Open-Library technology, Wi-Fi, self-checkout, tablet as web OPAC, whiteboard, laptops, and tablets for customers. Gaming offers such as Nintendo Switch and Playstation 5 are also integrated into the location concept. This makes it clear: Library East is not just an analog place but a place where media competence, digital participation, and classic reading culture are consciously thought together. ([stadtbibliothek-straubing.de](https://www.stadtbibliothek-straubing.de/ausleihen/benutzung))
Reading Garden, Rooms, and Quality of Stay
A central feature of the newly designed Library East is its high quality of stay. The library profile describes open, bright rooms with generous window areas, plenty of daylight, and variable furnishings. The equipment is deliberately kept flexible so that individual areas can be quickly adapted to different uses. Particularly important is that the children's area can be easily transformed into a lecture room with a few adjustments. An open kitchen, a whiteboard, a learning workshop, and barrier-free access are also part of the concept. This makes the location feel less like a rigid institution and more like a versatile space for different age groups and needs. ([oebib.de](https://www.oebib.de/bau-einrichtung-it/bau-und-einrichtung/bibliotheksportraets/stadtteilbibliothek-straubing-/-ost?utm_source=openai))
Additionally, the outdoor area gives the library an almost living room-like atmosphere. According to OeBiB, visitors can use the reading garden with a generous terrace and seating around the newly planted trees in the neighborhood square when the weather is nice. The garden invites reading and can also be used for events in the summer. Thus, the library expands its functional core far beyond just lending media. It creates a quiet place for short breaks, longer stays, and personal encounters in the neighborhood. This connection of indoor space, outdoor space, and community makes Library East so attractive. ([oebib.de](https://www.oebib.de/bau-einrichtung-it/bau-und-einrichtung/bibliotheksportraets/stadtteilbibliothek-straubing-/-ost?utm_source=openai))
History, Participatory Library, and Events
The history of Library East is closely linked to the development of the district. The building was constructed in 1964 when Straubing-East was still planned as a purely residential area in the 1960s. Later, the facility was extensively renovated and complemented with a new extension. The City of Straubing and the City Library did not simply pursue a structural renewal but the concept of a participatory library. As part of the funding program hochdrei, workshops, interviews, and creative workshops were conducted, involving children, young people, adults, and the library team. This resulted in a spatial concept that is oriented to the real needs of the district. ([stadtbibliothek-straubing.de](https://www.stadtbibliothek-straubing.de/standorte/straubing-ost))
Notably, the City Library of Straubing is, according to OeBiB, the first library in Lower Bavaria to offer Open-Library services. Thus, the Straubing-East branch is not only locally important but also of regional interest. The library takes on the role of the only cultural institution in the district and aims to strengthen social contacts, digital participation, and the connection to the neighborhood. Events are also part of this self-understanding: The City Library names the garden as a summer venue for events, and family offerings from Straubing refer to reading and game meetings in the beautiful rooms with a small garden. Thus, Library East is a place where everyday life, culture, and community naturally meet. ([stadtbibliothek-straubing.de](https://www.stadtbibliothek-straubing.de/standorte/straubing-ost))

great! just needs more space to read and learn. The opening hours should actually be the other way around, like on weekends and not when most people have to work or study. Just ask a few students, they would gladly take a shift.
